Not to be forgotten in the BD-R and -RE party is Sony themselves, who have announced they are shipping single-layer recordable Blu-ray discs, with dual layer versions to follow in June, The pricing follows the model set by TDK, $20/$48 for BD-R single/dual and $25/$60 for BD-RE single/dual layer respectively.

OK, so we have blanks, what about burners? Not that they would be anywhere near affordable now. With the format war still going on I think I'll wait until the dust settles on this one.

    25GB / 4.3GB = 5.8 = $5.80
Wake me when they drop below $5.00

    Check this out: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2148778&Tab=2&NoMapp=0

    It's Pioneer's BDR-101A Blu-ray at $999.

Funny it doesn't handle CDs though...

i belive they are already... i do not see how you got $5.80

    25gb (single layer) v's 4.3gb (single layer)
25gb divided by 4.3gb = 5.8 - this means 5.8 single layer dvdr's = 1 25gb disc so now you devide the cost of the 25gb disc by 5.8 to get the price that it equals compared to songle layer dvdr and that equals $3.4!!!

    25gb / 4.3gb = 5.8 (5.8 single layer dvdr = 1 25gb disc)
    $20 / 5.8 = $3.4

$3.4 is not that bad really. if drives were out and at an affordable price i would start archiving to 25gb disc's i have over 50 dvdr full of games, software, mp3 backups.

edit - appears while i was posting someone just found a burner as shown above.

  7. I believe I will pass and when I need 50GB I will jst buy five or six dual layer DVD+R discs for under $10 plus I don't need to buy a $1000 BD burner.

    No, my logic was this:

Current DVD-5 is $1 (or much less).
    5.8x DVD-5 is $5.80 (or less).
    So, I want a BD-RE for $5 or less.

well i gues that is fair enough. but i think that will be long time to get them that cheap. but i dont think $20 for 25gb is REALLY that bad. sure i would love to see them for $5 or less but with them not in mass production like dvdr i am happy with $20 for 25gb

When a 50GB BD-R end up to cost 2 euros, I'll start burn some. In 2 1/2 years from now that is

I just purchased a 50 pack of "Staples" house brand (CMC media code) 16X DVD-R
discs that burn without failure at quite a low PI/PO error rate in my NEC-3550 for $2.98
plus tax after coupon. That's about 6 cents per 4.3 Gig of storage. The Blu-ray discs
look like a joke, even if they fell to a buck a piece !

Good pricing and relatively cheap compared to what I original thought they would start selling for.
