Use Vob2mpg and convert the DVD VOBs to one mpeg2 file.
    Import the mpeg2 in pinnacle.
If pinnacle doesn't support mpeg2 input then open the mpeg2 file Virtualdubmpeg2 or VIrtualdubMOD and convert to dv-avi,huffyuv or frameserve directly to pinnacle.

But if you want to the best quality, less reencoding of dvd video, I would use MPeg VIdeo Wizard, it just reencode the transitions and such.

As simple or involved as you want it to be. I've spent as little as 20 minutes editing one video, and as much as 120 hours editing another. It all depends on how much stuff you are cutting and changing. The one I spent a lot of time on, was 6 hours of video, covering 15 yrs of off and on stuff with my kids. I had lots of frames with ex wifes, their kids and family, sideways video, etc... It all cleaned up very nice, but it took a lot of frame by frame. Other videos involved cutting out a few dark/blank frames, adding a transition or two, a menu, and it was done..

    The reason i ask..
There's different approaches depending on the complication of edits...

That will let me tell him whether he should use an Mpeg cutter, recompress out to .AVI, or simply recapture...
I know what your talking about..When i put together a montage, i calculate an hour per every minute of final output...That doesn't include rendering or authouring time either..

    At least i'm getting faster.. :P :P
