Good, well priced, but slow : tmpgenc. Good range of built in filters as well.

High quality, fast but more expensive : Procoder
    See also Procode Express

High quality, fast, very expensive : CCE SP
    See also CCE Basic

Free and worthy of mention : HCEnc, Quenc
    Read my blog here.

Unfortunatelly both are useless for VCD - HC cannot encode mpeg1 and QuEnc mpeg1 CBR is quite not CBR and far below the quality of tmpgenc. My opinion only.

    Check out Bbmpeg ...

    Accept's frameserved file's from vitualdub/mod
    Accept's avs script's , such as motion menu's
Preview , what you see is what you'll get
Snip a clip , encode from frame ? too frame ?
Batch , encode all as seperate or as single

    Many advanced setting's other's dont have .

It's the only one I use , and ifoedit has no problem's with encoded file's during dvd authoring .

kk01 - TMPGenc is best for VCD. It's a cheap solution for MPEG-2.

If you have a lot of money or have access to what I would call "demo" copies of CCE or Procoder that never expire, they are better for MPEG-2 than TMPGenc. TMPGenc is not bad at all for MPEG-2, but Procoder and CCE are better.

It is generally considered that no single encoder is best for VCD and DVD and most people use a different encoder for each. However, I once heard from a guy who was using CCE to encode VCDs and he's the only person I know of who thought that CCE did a good job with MPEG-1 video, so some of this is personal preference.

Try the free version of TPMGEnc at http:\\tmpgenc.net. You can encode VCD format only. It's one of the best VCD encoders.
