Does anyone know an answer on the following question:

Lately I have been considered of buying a DVD-recorder. After reading many reviews of many different recorders, I found out that many users are facing problems when they want to record certain programs. This is caused by the use of the broadcast flag, that is sent out together with a TV-signal and that prevents the user to record this program.
Because I don't want to buy a recorder I can not use anymore in a few years, I have considered to buy a TV/Capture card for my PC.
I have been using an analog TV-card for several years without any problems. But my question is: When I use a TV-card with a digital tuner, can these programs also be blocked by the broadcast flag? This is pretty important to know before I buy something, that will not work the way I like.

Any advise on this matter will be very much appreciated.

    Hi simpledisc,

Theoretically, it is possible. Specially when dealing with new versions of Windows, I have even heard users of Windows Media Center Edition having problems with recordings due to DRM crap inserted in their files. The restriction could be written in software, or hardware could be designed with DRM from the start.

There is also the built in feature of several chips that come with macrovision protection, Microsoft could at any time, by Autoupdate, include DRM. However, if you keep hardware and software DRM free in your basement, you could still use it for several years without worries.

The broadcast flag law has not passed (yet) in US Congress so broadcasters should not be doing this. Cable and Sat systems do use 5c protection to block or limit recording of their channels. The FCC has prohibited cable/sat systems from adding encryption to local broadcast stations.

When come to (CGMS-A) Content Generation Management System for Analog some channel have this enable like HBO and other which dosen't apply to you becuases you live outside the US unless you are using Windows Media Center Edition and CGMS-A is being pass on over to thoses to other area of world but any all other 3rdparty don't support that any way nor DRM enbeded carp like MCE dose.
Keep mind that DVD-recorder can not record HDTV nor DVB in to DVD disc for it play back in reg DVD Player.
But in your case being you live in Netherlands need DVB.
