Hi all. Just a quickish question. I recently ordered some tdk dvd-r 4x/8x and i recieved some 16x disks which i assume is because they no longer do the spindles of slower speeds for tdk probably?
Anyway, i was reading the label on the side.. and as usual it says check that the recorder is compatible - it could damage the machine if u use the wrong one!
Tdk 4x dvd-r works fine, 8x works fine except a small bug type thing at the start of disks if u have it on XP mode, but its bearable.
Pansonic manual : 4.7gb - for general version 2.0/ 4x - speed dvd-r revision 1.
The tdk 8x disks are actually "dvd-r 8x revision 3", but i have emailed Pansonic and im told disks for video, should work up to 8x.
However, the 16x disks say they are "version 2.1, revision 6".. so im a bit worried that i shouldnt use these in my recorder.. because pansonic said up to 8x, and its a different revision number.
Should i not use these with the recorder, or has anyone used them before on the dvd recorder ?
I read something about the material being slightly different with RW disks at higher speeds, but im not sure what the story is with dvd-r though. I would have thought the same type of thing. I also asked Panasonic on my 2nd email about firmware for UK recorders (as they have ones for USA).. and they didnt actually answer the question.. how useful.
I suppose i could always use these new 16x disks on my pc burner, and find some slower disks somewhere else. Panasonic's own disks seem to be difficult to find in some places, and i've noticed their own disks are now 1-8x! You would think they'd bring out firmware updates to accomodate the new speeds.
Thx for ur help.

I dont think i'll use the 16x disks in the recorder at all actually.. all the signs seem to say i shouldnt.. and i dont wanna damage my recorder. -

Almost any media works in my Pannys. -
I used to have a Latin America version of DMR-E55. At one point in time some media did not worked in my machine. I was not able to close some recordings and other times it took a large amount of time to recognize.
This was fixed after upgrading my unit to the latest US firmware available. After the upgrade, all media was usable, but I lost PAL-M support. My E55 became a NTSC only machine. For me this was no problem as I live in a NTSC country.
As time passed I changed my recorder to a DMR-ES10. This machine would not accept the US firmware version, so I wrote an e-mail to Latin America Panasonic DVD support group. They actually sent me the latest firmware for this machine. It is quite new, from Jan 2006.
Why don’t you try contacting Panasonic EU and maybe they will send you an updated firmware for you machine by e-mail. These firmware files weight around 4Gig. You will need an e-mail account with support of these big files.
Good luck. -
Hi while Browsing in a forum I found the link for the DMR-ES10 PAL firmware (Germany Panasonic web site). I did not browse aroun much but you could try looking for your model there and they may have an updated firmware.
