    i am looking for a program to convert a dvd from pal to ntsc. not using the hack where you change one of the files and the dvd player thinks it is ntsc, as that did not work for me. i am looking for something that will reencode the files and such, but keep the menu and the quality. any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Here's a few methods: https://www.videohelp.com/guides.php?howtoselect=4;41#4;41

    You will find it's not that easy to get a good software conversion.

    i know how to convert pal to ntsc and such, but i was looking for a program to do it for me automatically keeping the dvd menus and chapters intact. if i must do it by hand, i can do that (i was doing the conversion thing since tmpgenc was only available in japanese, or what ever language), but i would like to still use the same menus and stuff. i do not want to do a complete reauthor of the dvd. i do not see a guide there that really entails doing just that. maybe i overlooked it?

    thanks for the reply

    If you are really looking for a all-in-one software converter, try ConvertXToDVD, it comes about the closest.

    The better way is to play it on a PAL compliant DVD player and record it on a NTSC compliant recorder. Or best, get a PAL/NTSC DVD player and don't convert at all.

    eh i was afraid of that. i am not sure how dvds store chapters, but i am assuming that i cannot just run a pulldown on the vobs and replace them. or would that work? meaning would it keep the chapters, if so menus could be dealt with in the same manner if i am not mistaken.

  6. I was looking to find this out as well. At the same time, though, i was looking to slow the film down and for some reason, none of those "how-to" guides talks about it with TMPGenc. I know it can be done just with this program (video-only). I'm not looking to keep the same speed.

    Can anyone help out?

    So you have the reencoded 720x480 video, but the original 720x576 menu? Chaptering is the least of your worries. NuMenu4U is supposed to be able to do a PAL2NTSC conversion on the menus, but I was never able to get it to work. Just reencoding the menus for NTSC, and also adjusting the buttons, is a fairly complex process.

    i was looking to slow the film down

    Slowing the video down to 23.976fps is easily accomplished using AviSynth and then frameserving to TMPGEnc. I don't think TMPGEnc is going to do it by itself. And, of course, you'll also have to slow down the audio.

    It doesn't exist yet as what you are asking for is a very complex process. As stated most people will try the conversion a and then go and invest in a player that will do the conversion 'on the fly.'

    What does AviSynth do? any step-by-step instructions for this? I thought just using TMPGenc would do it when you change it from 25fps to 23.976.

  10. Better never than late, eh?

    What does AviSynth do?

    Well, if you know nothing about AviSynth, then a project of this complexity probably isn't the place to start. But FitCD will give you the script to feed into TMPGEnc. I don't use TMPGEnc myself, so I can't help you with what it can and cannot do. I know it takes AviSynth scripts, though. With 16:9 encoding and ITU resizing turned on, I get this:

    Mpeg2Source("C:\Path\To\Movie.d2v")
    LanczosResize(720,480)
    AssumeFPS(23.976)
    ConvertToRGB24()#for TMPGEnc

    Or you can leave off the AssumeFPS line, encode for 25fps instead and then run DGPulldown afterwards for 25->29.97fps. That way you don't have to slow the audio.

    PAL to NTSC using the DGPulldown method:

    1.) THE HOLY GRAIL? ... A new method of PAL to NTSC conversion!
    2.) PAL to NTSC problem

    PAL to NTSC using the "old" non-DGPulldown methods:

    1.) DVD Pal to DVD NTSC
    2.) How to convert PAL DVD to NTSC DVD?

    All of this is due to the pioneering work of Xesdeeni. I am simply passing along things that I have learned from his work and based on my own experiences of dealing with the issues of PAL to NTSC.

    Xesdeeni's website ---> http://www.geocities.com/xesdeeni2001/StandardsConversion/

    Please note that Xesdeeni has posted some new information on his website that pertains to the "old" method ... specifically in regards to deinterlacing. It is worth looking it up and reading it. It is the link at the top of his page ... that takes you to the new "version".

    Good Luck !!!

  12. OK I know nothing about scripts. Is there any way to do just the video part of the PAL to NTSC conversion through TMPGenc? Without using scripts? I've tried to use them but it never works. I'm sure I'm doing something wrong.
