What are you converting? Whats your source? Whats your destination? A little more detail is needed.

Tmpgenc can convert avi and mpg to dvd mpeg2 or vcd mpeg1 (even svcd mpeg2 but thats not a very common need these days).

If you want to go from dvd to divx you can use a number of free converters like dvdx or even just use dvddecrypter and load the vobs into virtualdubmod to make your divx/xvid.

Windows movie maker can take virtually any source and make wmv's for you. (windows xp or 2000 only, or is it xp only these days?).

The point is there is tons of conversion software out there. There are even a whole new subset to convert your video to ipod or psp.

Use this link for guides to get started:

And the tools section is a consolidated list of all the tools you could possibly need, a collection of payware, shareware, and freeware:

This was my original question but then I noticed that this forum wasnt for dvd conversion so I moved it.
I made a video with a dv camera, copied it to a dvd with a dvd recorder. I then used the dv tape over and dont have that video on tape anymore. I need to convert the dvd back to a file either avi or mpg so I can edit it in Sony Vegas Movie Studio. I need a program that can do this. Thanks

Which version of Vegas Movie Studio do you have -- I believe the latest version (maybe the Platinum Edition) allows you to import from DVD

You can rip the dvd with dvd decrypter. You will get vobs in a video_ts folder. From there you can use virtualdubmod to convert to avi - probably uncompressed avi if you're going to do a lot of editing. Though uncompressed avi is huge so you may want to use something like huffy or one of the other "lossless" codecs for a little smaller file size.

dendence, you didn't really 'move' your topic, you just asked the question again in a different forum. If you need to move a topic, ask a moderator to do that for you. It's a lot simpler and you don't have to repeat the question again, and it keeps all the comments in one place.
