Has anyone noticed sometimes your monitor makes a noise when it changes to a different website or different program??

I'm using a flat tube crt monitor. I've noticed everyone once in awhile. It will make a slight popping sound or maybe like static electricity noise. I don't quite know how to explain it. Maybe sometime I'll post a video of it to try to duplicate it.

Is there a technical term for this?? And no there isn't any media playing in the background. Just curious.
Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw?

Perhaps a bit of dust covering the screen.

If your TV has a thin layer of dust and you brush your hand
across it, while the TV is on, you will hear the same crackling
    noise from the discharge.

Monitor might do it too when radiation levels change
    as the display changes.

That's my best technical explaination for the day! :P

    Oh well.

Wouldn't that only happen if he does that manually in the Settings?

Would that be the sound of the relay inside the monitor?

  5. Mine has a high pitched whine every so often. Of course it is about 10 years old now. But I still prefer my old trinitron to most of the new stuff.

Noise may come from high tension coil and dust accumulation around it. Some monitors (trinitrons) may ring a bit due to aperture grill properties (wires). Changes come from different brightness levels (draws more current).

    Now that makes sense. Thanks.

The high pitched squeal you hear sometimes is probably the high voltage transformer resonating. The high voltage is usually at a frequency of ~15Khz. It can also happen when there is high voltage leakage inside the high voltage cage. It's usually not a problem if it happens only with resolution changes for short periods. If it becomes continuous, it may fail soon if the high voltage is leaking inside the cage and overloading the components.

You may be able to blow the dust out, but you would need to power down the monitor and let the voltages bleed off for a few days before doing that. Even then, I would not recommend opening up a CRT monitor and cleaning it unless you are familiar with high voltage circuits.

EDiT: yoda313, I just re-read you original post and that does sound like a static discharge leaking off.

I definitely agree with you. If you go to places like NASA or the FBI (and presumably they are able to get the best gear), you will still see a lot of big, heavy, deluxe grade CRTs. And that's probably because they are still the best, for many things. For obvious convenience reasons, the market for these has probably shrunk drastically, so the manufacturers may not be making them much anymore, and you have to wonder if the quality will suffer as a result. The better flat panels have been steadily improving and dropping in price, though.

My CRT makes a very noticeable ker-thunk noise when it comes on, but this is supposed to be an auto-degauss function doing its thing.

Move your electrostatic air cleaner far away...well thats what worked for me. I thought me 19" Trinitron was dieing. Poping noises... going out of focus... moved my Ionic Breeze and all is good again.

This started happening in the last 2 or 2 weeks with my old 17 inch CRT monitor, after which it died.

But now I've got a 19 inch widescreen LCD monitor.. It's nice, real nice

  13. I also had that problem with my old Envision EN-775e CRT.. so much hi-pitched wining.. I gave it to my sister and got a MAG LT916s LCD instead... don't regret it!
