    Hello,
I am capturing my home videos using a JVC HR-S9600 and a Matrox RT.X10 capture card.
Everything is working fairly well, however, when the video goes snowy between scenes, or at the very beginning of the video tape, the picture turns olive and then starts moving like Macrovision protection - only there is none. These are my own home movies. I'm not positive what's causing this and any suggestions would be helpful. I'm not positive, but it seems to me that the VCR's TBC may be the root of the problem, because when I turn it off the problem seems to stop. I'm not positive that's what caused it though. If it is the time base corrector, I would like to find out how to use it without that problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Daniel

P.S.- If you would like a sample image of the olive picture I described, please ask.

The circuits need a clean signal to sync up. In the absence of a clean signal, the capture card will default to a value or drift. Edit out the bad stuff and don't leave noise gaps on the tape.

Many TV sets or VCR's immediately switch to blue at the hint of a sync problem.

    Hi,
That makes pretty good sense. I don't mind editing out the noise, but maybe you'll be able to help me figure out this: The olive remains until I change the capture source from SVHS to Composite, and then back to SVHS again. It's really peculiar. Once it's in that mode, that's one of the only ways to get the picture back to normal.
    Thanks!

Do you mean switching at the capture card? Connect the VCR directly to a TV and verify it is working correctly. If the vcr is OK, reinstall the capture card and see if the problem continues. If it does, talk to Matrox and get a new one.
