  1. Hey all,
I have alot videos in .avi, Dvix and Xvid formats and want to put them on DVD+R for backup and to play in a compatible DVD player.

I'm looking at a Toshiba SD-3990 at BestBuy. From my understanding, if a vid was encoded to the Divx and Xvid standards for an avi, then it should play, as is, on a compatible DVD home standalone player, burned to DVD with Nero. Is this right?

And to make sure I have my thinking right, Divx and Xvid ARE .avis, right?

    Thanks

Divx and Xvids can be AVIs. AVI is just wrapper. If they are correct and your DVD player can play those types of files than yes you just drag/drop/burn and watch the videos.

    Yes, but:
Different players impose some limitation on what it plays and not. Notably, GMC and QPEL in DivX/XviD rules many players out, at least those with ESS Vibratto/Vibratto II chipsets. Just avoid these features when you encode.

Some players don't read AVI from DVD, just from CD.

Frame sizes > DVD std (720x576 PAL) also cause trouble for many players.

What application you use to burn the AVIs to data DVD/CD is of no significance

  4. I have the Toshiba SD-3990 and it will play DIVX/XVID files recorded on DVD's.

I did notice with one I was watching the other day that it would stutter and stall on one of the videos. It could be the encoding that was causing the problems. The other three videos on the disc played fine.

  5. Good to know. That's the whole reason for wanting one in the first place, so I can put them on DVD. I could put everything I have so far on half a dozen DVDs, whereas to put them on CD would take 4 or 5 times as many.

Don't expect a menu to choose which file you want. My LiteOn plays them sequentially, altho I can use the "next chapter" button to advance to next video.
If you have 5 files, and want to play the last one, you have to skip through untill you reach it. If you press the STOP button, you have to go through it all again, then fast forward to the spot you left off at.
If price/storage is a concern, then by all means, place as many as will fit on a DVD. Myself, I would prefer 1 avi movie on a CD, and save my DVDs for DVD compliant material.

Most players show a simple "file browser" (with a stretch of imagination, you may even call it a menu!) when you put a data CD/DVD in it, to let you select what file to play.
