Subtitle Translator v. 1.71

Hi everyone:

Would someone please tell me how to use Unicode with this software, Sutitle Translator? I am trying to translate a few subtitles into several foreign languages that have additional marks such as ~, `, ^, ', etc. I can use these marks in Front Page, Excel, Word, Power Point,...but not in Subtitle Translator.

Uh... probably not much help, but I use Subtitle Workshop and I have successfully entered some Chinese characters with it, so I know THAT program works. I haven't tried Subtitle Translator yet, so I can't comment about it.

I downloaded and installed the software. It looks pretty promising since the software has the choices of languages that I want. I will try it out and let you know the results.

Unfortunately, I have tried but failed.

I even used Unikey 3.1 to type in Word, Excel, then copied/pasted that to the translation wiindow (lower right). That also failed, everything looked right in Word, Excel but turned into some strange spellings after being pasted.

Did you pick the proper character set in Subtitle Workshop? Here's a screenshot:



Note the highlighted portions in red.

(The movie is blank because the capture software can't capture the overlay, the picture is there, really)

Oh, I am using NJStar to enter my Chinese words, but it shouldn't matter what you use.

The red highlight on far left is what codepage is being used. ANSI for the left, Chinese Big5 for the right. Translator Mode / TRANSLATED side is displayed. Then the last two are the lines being displayed, and what's displayed IN the movie.

I did. Actually I kind of gave up on this software.

Just so you know what I did and what ahappened. I loaded the subtitle file. ANSI appeared in both places (where you circled in red). I left the first ANSI unchanged and chose Vietnamese for the second.

Then I went to the translation section to type in my Vietnamese subtitle. Every time I typed in the accent mark for the Vietnamese word, the whole shebang disappeared.

So, adios Subtitle Workshop.

Disappeared, hmmm... You are using In-Place Edition? Or not? (This program is a bit perculiar about where the edits can go)

No, I do not use anything else but Subtitle Workshop and my Unikey - something to tell my computer how I want to type my Vietnamese words. Please keep in mind that I am still using Windows98. :P

Shouldn't matter. I've used both NJStar and Subtitle Workshop on Win98 before, and they accept the Chinese input into those same fields just fine. In fact, you can see the above screenshot looks ALMOST like Win98... (I run my WinXP just like Win98)

What font do you use for Vietnamese display? While I don't read Vietnamese, I've seen it before, they look kinda like French, with a LOT of those markup symbols.

Just warning you though, it took quite a bit of experimentation to get the subtitles to display right in Subtitle Workshop, THEN it took a bit of testing to fix the display in Vobsub and TextSub (i.e. VSFilter) before I got Chinese subtitles displayed right.

I use either Tahoma or Times New Roman font for my web page.

Some day I will get to the bottom of this "mystery".
