I am in desperate need of viewing a "stop watch timer" on the DV tape output. That is, I want a timer on the screen that starts from 00:00:00 and starts counting, either from the moment of record begin or by pushing a button. Clock time is available for several cameras but this is not enough.

On VHS cameras I have an external stop watch that is connected to the camera and superpositioned onto the screen but I cannot find this for DV.

Grateful for any hints on this issue!

ps. I know it is possible to solve it by feeding the signal through a text generator and then to a tape recorder but his is a NOT satisfactory. ds.

    Hi,
Can the timer be added as a post production operation, or does it need to happen when you record the live action?

If you can add it in post, this AVISynth Filter lets you add the timecode from the DV onto the video...

    Hi Dan,

Thank you for the answer! It will be helpful in some cases.

However the timer needs to happen during the live action. We tape several hours per day and do not normally post-process the material other than view it for reporting.

  4. 1. If your DVcam has counter, then turn it on, and capture from the audio/video output.
    2. If your DVcam does not have counter, then pass thru a VCR that has, with counter on screen, then record thru its audio/video.
