Is this caused by the "ADS - DVD Express" capture device as it encodes to the mpeg because I have a TV plugged into the "Panasonic 4 head Ominivision VHS player" and it looks good on the TV but not on the output file. ?? It's only a 5 minute section on the whole tape that's giving me greave. I don't really want to buy a TBC just for 5 minutes but for some reason I think that's what I'm going to be told I need.

  2. If the video looks good on TV, then the problem you have is with the capturing device, not the VCR or tape.

Are you sure that's not a tracking problem?

If there is tracking probelm then it should look like a badly tracked video, and wouldn't look good on TV.

TV sets have fast H-Sync lock to follow a wobbly VCR.

A simple capture card uses just a V or a loose H lock and just captures what you give it. Garbage in - Garbage out.

    That really is not accurate.

Any capture card or device will have trouble with poor video but a TV is known to be less forgving and part of that is that a TV is not converting the analog signal to a digital signal.

Some capture devices are more forgiving than others but it would look like you need some sort of Time Base Corrector.

I will point out though that the ADS DVD Express or Xpress whichever it is ... it is a capture device known to have fits when the video is of poor quality. The ADS Instant DVD 2.0 is much more forgiving and doesn't cost much more especially when you purchase it on-line.

So it's either another capture device or more than likely a TBC of some sort.

Thanks for your help guys. I bought the capture device at Sams club so they will take it back anytime. I have been realy pleased with it for all the other tapes that are just as old as this tape. I have no Idea why the small section of tape is so bad and like I said I really hate spending the money for a time base corrector just for this small spot on the tape. Really puts me a predicament. Would it help to try different VHS players??

It might help. You can always take the problem tape to a dub house.

The tape was either incorrectly recorded or getting sticky with age. A few rewinds might help.

There is nothing in a typical capture card that would deal with this. They don't time base correct.

What would it cost at a dub house??
