I am considering purchsing Vegas6 +DVD at some point, and I would like to know more about it's previewing capabilities. I know it allows preview ouput through DV hardware, but I only have a miniDV cam. I'd rather not have to hook it up it just for previewing.

I have a Matrox P650 which allows dual monitors + TV out with the optional TripleHead kit. The TV out is dependent on video overlays being used in the preview window of the NLE. It then uses PureVideo/DVDMax to send a full screen signal o the TV. This works just fine with any program that uses overlays.

Older versions of Vegas apparently did not use overlays in the preview window. This meant that PureVideo would not be activated, and no signal would be output to the TV. According to the release notes for Vegas 6, it now supports sending a fullscreen preview to a second monitor. This is nice, but the Matrox TV out is not an independent monitor so I don't think that Vegas would be able send to it directly.

My questions is this: does Vegas 6 now use overlays for the preview? If it does that would allow me to use the full desktop space of two monitors plus a video monitor.

Download a trial version if one is available. If not, request a trial from Sony and see if it will do what you want. I only use Vegas 5, and I do all my editing on my LCD monitor. So far, every dvd I've burned is very close to what I saw on my LCD (as far as color and clarity). The brightness of course looks a little bit better on my lcd, than it does on my old Sony 32" television.
