My guess is that only TV shows that were originally aired in HD will be released in Blu-Ray or HD-DVD. I would also guess that they will not release TV shows on HD disks until/if there is market acceptance for either format for movies.

Oh I'm sure they'll release "upconverted" tv shows on high def dvds.

Maybe they'll color the packages differently for ones that are "TRUE" hd content from "UPCONVERTED" content.

    Hollywood loves rerealising material.

I'm sure these'll be reasonable by comparison

Hollywood certainly does like to re-release whenever there is a market opportunity. But strictly speaking, the legal definition of HDTV (from what I've read) demands that the picture have a 16:9 ratio. Even if they re-telecine and resample the original prints for 1080 lines of information (and I seriously doubt they will), the picture will remain 4:3. I woudl hope they couldn't advertise it as HD. Only the last 1-2 seasons of most TV sitcoms and dramas have been made in HD.

As far as upconverting, today's upconverting players do a very nice job and the disks have only limited DRM hassles. I know I can convert TV episodes into a format for my handheld without paying an additional charge. "Managed Copy" will probably require a credit card number.

Yeah but you'll need a drm enabled monitor to watch it at full res. More $$$$$

Well there's always the analog hole. Just capture it to your computer and compress it for your portable player. Sure it'd be a pain to do a whole tv series but its possible. Because I'm sure the next gen players will have the standard rca/svideo outputs so you can pump it out to a normal connection. It won't be high res but lets face it, neither are portable video players.
