  1. In a recent post about a film called Water I was having trouble playing it. I wanted to start a new thread cause I think I am addressing a different issue now.

Tonight I rented Capote and it stopped playing an hour and twenty minutes into the film. I played it on my computer in the VLC application and same deal, the program couldnt read the film at the same spot. This is a brand new copy. No one has viewed it before. I even ran it through some software like DVD Decrpytor and AnyDVD just to see what would happen and those programs couldnt rip it either. I wasn't trying to steal a rental movie just merely see if they would read it.

Is the DVD industry shooting itself in the foot by making their dvds over-encrpyted? Or am I hallucinating? Is there a new breed of copy protection that was developed for 2006?

Water had a similar problem. I thought Water might've had a defective pressing but after Capote's failure tonight I don't think these are defective or dirty discs at all.

I rented Capote and had just finished watching it with no problem before reading this thread. There were no problems playing it. I just tried to rip it to see if I got the same problem as you. Ripped it twice- once with DVD Decrypter and once with DVDFab Decrypter. No problems with either one.

So it's definitely not a new copy protection. If it was any kind of problem with the disk it should have given me the same problems it gave you. Therefore, since you're sure it's not a defective/dirty disk, I'm afraid the problem must be either with the computer or the operator.

The operator being me? Or my other player in the house? I want to buy a new DVD player for my den now, but I wanted to discuss this first before buying one and finding out that it too will botch my playback.

I should also point out that I believe the versions of Capote we watch are different from each other: I think they press different editions for Canadian folk.

Although they might press different editions for Canada. Many of the DVD's sold in the US are pressed in Canada.

same disk in both usa and Canada - different packages is all ..

no one reporting problems with playing this disk, so far...

but it is supposed to be very poor quality transfer -- lots of dirt and crap , very grainy ,,,

mrtunes - In the future when asking a similar question, always tell us who manufactured the DVD. Capote is a Sony disc. Sony is infamous for their use of ARCCOS to protect DVDs. DVDDecrypter can't rip new versions of ARCCOS without some very ugly supporting work being done. I don't know about AnyDVD, but DVDFabDecrypter is known to be able to deal with ARCCOS.

Your problem with VLC sounds like an ARCCOS problem. ARCCOS uses invalid disc sectors to confuse ripping programs. VLC probably doesn't know how to deal with it. Try renting Kung Fu Hustle, which also uses ARCCOS and you'll probably have exactly the same problems as you are having with Capote.

Additionally, this post is really in the wrong forum. Guess no moderators bothered to read it. This should have gone in the DVD to DVDR forum since this is not about standalone DVD players.

  10. Ok sorry for not identifying the company that makes the DVD. I did play the DVD in Windows Media Player too... so three players: a Daytek which has played everything fine for the past few years except Water, VLC and now Windows Media Player.

It is about standalone DVD players. I'm not trying to copy it or rip it, I was just using those programs to analyze what the hell is going wrong. My only goal for watching Capote is to play it on my standalone dvd player in my den, I don't even want to be using VLC or Windows Media Player. It's possible that my Daytek is outDayted and i'm ready to try a newer generation machine.

I recently bought this disk and went to back it up on my hard drive and had a problem reading it with DVD Decryptor and ARCCOS removal didnt work either. And no Im not a pirate either! Ive just invested too much in DVDs to only have them get scratched, so I back up my purchases.

  13. Yeah just to follow up I took the DVD I rented to Best Buy and I popped it on a Sony machine there. It had the exact same problem. I have looked at the disc carefully and it's as clean as can be, the only time it has been handled is when the blockbuster people transferred it from the original case to their rental one(this was rented the day it came out).

  14. This disc does have practically every form of copy protection applied to it (except for Macrovision Ripguard which Chicken Little does have). With that said, disc played back fine here. AnyDVD and CloneDVD ripped it to harddisk no probs.
