Has anyone tried to use this burner to read a disc that has been recorded by a JVC DR-M100S or Toshiba R-D4 stand alone recorders?

My DRU-810A will not recognize any disc burned by these two stand alones. It does not matter if they are formatted in VR or Video format. All discs have been finalized and my Sony DRU-720A and Sony DRU-500AUX burners read them fine.

I have updated to the latest firmware twice and it did not make any difference. Other than this issue, it works flawlessly. It even reads discs recorded on my Sony RDR-GX300 stand alone. Finalized or not.

Sony tech support was no help. They said they will escalate the issue to the engineers but they don’t think the unit is defective. Which equates to: 1-3 complaints = 0 firmware updates.

I just want to see if others have this problem or can test before I get nasty and demand a replacement unit. However, I think it is a firmware glitch.

Your post question is SONY 810A but in your post you mention SONY 720A. Which is the dvd burner in question 810A or 710A?

DRU-810A has the problem. I own an 810, 720, 500. The 720 and 500 read the discs fine.

Your SONY 810A drive is a rebadged BENQ 1640. SONY no longer makes their own dvd burners. My suggestion would to be crossflash your 810 to the BENQ 1640. Check out the BENQ FORUM at Cdfreaks.com for more info. The drive can be flashed back to official SONY 810A drive if crossflashing it to the BENQ 1640 drive doesn't produce good burns. All you would need to crossflash is either BQFLASHER or WinDWFlash and BSLB or BSMB or BSOB CVT files. What brand of dvd media are you using?

Here's a link on how to crossflash your SONY 810A to BENQ 1640:
    http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=171380

Advantages to crossflashing to official BENQ 1640 firmware are using BENQ's QSUITE 2.1 which is a tool used to tweak your burns. It remembers the write strategy on known/unknown dvd media. BENQ has official firmware upgrades frequently compared to other manufacturers. This is to match the newer dvd media that is produced by different manufacturers.

I crossed flashed but it did not help.

    The media is Sony DVD-RW.

    Any other suggestions?

  6. Might be obvious, but do you know if this media can be read with the 810 at all?

Yes, I can record using the same disc on my Sony RDR-GX300 stand alone and the 810 reads it just fine.

This has been discussed before that the BENQ 1640 sometimes CANNOT read back correctly DVD-RW. I can't remember if it was just with SONY DVD-RW media. What's the media ID of those SONY DVD-RW discs? My suggestion is to use another brand of DVD-RW media like MAXELL or VERBATIM and see what happens. IMHO I would just use another brand of DVD-RW media or use another drive that can read back the DVD-RW correctly. I use SONY DVD-RW with my standalone PIONEER 220 recorder and use my Toshiba/Liteon dvdroms to read back the discs. Do a search on GOOGLE or at CDFREAKS.COM on BENQ 1640 DVD-RW media problem. You can even do a search here at videohelp.

I will try another brand, but like I said earlier, if I use the same media in the sony stand alone, the 810 can read it.

Also, the only info I can find on the Benq 1640 not liking DVD-RW is when burning not reading.

    Thanks

yuck on those RITEK....they must be SONY DVD-RW that's "MADE IN TAIWAN". I use "MADE IN JAPAN" SONY DVD-RW media with my PIONEER 220 standalone dvd recorder with no problems. It seems your problem isn't the dvd burner but the dvd media that you're using.

Not trying to argue with you, but how can it be the media if I can remove the disc from the 810 and put it in either the 720 or 500 burners and both of them read the same disc fine. Not to mention the 810 reads the same media if it was formatted/recorded by the Sony stand alone. Doesn't that point to the burner not being compatible with the DVD structure created by the Toshiba or JVC, not the media itself?

With that said, I will try another brand. However, all the media in all of the retail stores seems to be made in Taiwan. I would hate to order a whole pack of “Made in Japan” RW’s only to find it makes no difference, but I guess there is no other option other than trying some store bought Taiwanese media.
