Tokyo, Japan -- Toshiba Corporation and Canon Inc. today announced that they will start the first stage of mass production of SED panels in July 2007 and launch SED TVs in the 4Q of calendar year 2007. SED, the Surface-conduction Electron-emitter Display, is a next-generation flat-panel display that offers excellent performance characteristics.

they were supposed to start THIS year - announced last year ..
a year delay doesnt sound to good - as lcd prices will keep dropping"Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -
Wow, another year delay. My rule of thumb is to assume any tech project will take twice as long as estimated (even if you account for this in your estimation). Since they're talking about 16 months from now you can probably assume we won't see SED until late 2008 or early 2009.

Wow. The world is just getting used to LCD/plasma, I'm still on crt, and the next generation is announced. Do we ever get a breathing space between leaps ? So what is this SED all about ? Never heard of it.

Brighter than a CRT.
Easy scaled to large panels.
Less than 2 inches thick
In short it may well blow Plasma, LCD, and DLP out of the market. That is if they ever get it to market. Also it may finally be the end of CRTs. the technology is similar to CRT so in effect the CRT will be reborn. -
sounds nice...for now though, until probably like 2012 when the prices become REASONABLE on these things, im sticking to my LCD....

according to reporters (last years electronics show) this IS where we want to be. Nothing supposedly comes even close... Sounds very tempting. Too bad it's gonna be delayed although as the linked piece indicates should already be available in Japan (?).

it's like see SED and die... maybe this is what Mayans have based their calendar on: SED development cycle?
With DRM we're f%/&%/ anyway. So why prolong this misery... -
Tis a shame and I was ready to rob the kids college fund and starve the family for a year to be the first with a SED.

This sort of explains why all of Toshiba's CRT sets are now made by Orion. Guess they're focusing all of their attention on the new SED technology and fully expect them to replace CRT's.
As far as the 'end of the world' Mayan prophecy goes, the Maya believed that anything used by man (tools, etc.) acquired a 'lifeforce', and that these tools would somehow be turned against us. So maybe SED's are the home electronics equivalent to the special chip that led to the creation of Skynet in the 'The Terminator'.
See, TV really is bad for you. -
Technology is great, but hard to keep up with.I've gone from a 27" crt through a 50" rear projection to a 52" DLP in 4 years. All the while knowing SED was being developed.I'm glad it's going to be late in development.I won't be looking for an excuse to buy one as quickly as i thought.Seeing as i just had my set calibrated properly by an ISF tech.

TV manuf. probably have you high on their list. You'll get SED early subscription invitation for sure (maybe next week...?)

I wouldn't be surprised. My wife thinks i'm nuts anyway. That would confirm it for her.Twice she's come home from work to a new tv.I'll tell anyone emphatically though that getting a new widescreen tv and not getting it calibrated is a bad idea.None of these tv's are set up properly in the factory. There is a service menu within that can drastically change the way you watch tv.I thought mine was ok until i had it calibrated. An ISF tech with the latest gear and software can make a surprising difference.
Enough said. Now,when are these new SED tv's coming out.bmiller,ont.canada -
I am starting to have trouble reading any text in the corners of our 10+year old 27" Hitachi CRT TV. It is time for a new TV. What really looks best in the show rooms are the DLPs. Very much better than any of the LCD TVs and quite better than the Plasma TVs.
-
I think (at least some) DLP models are capable of 1080p and from what I understand both HD DVD and Blue Ray are capable of 1080p output. I also just read that the Sony PS3 will be capable of 1080p although for game play it seems that 720p would be "best" but I'm not sure about how DLP handles 720p since it seems most other TV tech just upsamples 720p to 1080i.
Anyways these are things to consider if buying a new TV today or in the near future.

Better SED, than dead.
Whatever doesn't kill me, merely ticks me off. (Never again a Sony consumer.) -
Hmmm .... I guess what goes around comes around ... and I'm still watching my Panasonic 53" CRT and it still looks as good as anything else I've seen in 1080i mode.
Apparently, the next generation of TV's will be the so called "FED" or "Field Emission Display" which is essentially a flat CRT! Can you imagine?
