  3. Any ideas? Okay, here's one: run system file checker. Start -> Run.

Type the following in the box and hit enter:

    sfc /scannow

Note the space after sfc. Depending on whether you have an I386 folder on your hard drive, you may be prompted to put the Windows install disc in your optical drive. It'll check and replace any corrupted system files if necessary, and no, it won't tell you if it found any. It'll run and exit when done.

Dunno if it'll help, couldn't hurt. Good luck.

BIOS is mostly for the CPU/Motherboard. If you upgraded your motherboard drivers or made some changes in them, a BIOS update might help. I doubt if the video card has firmware that could be changed.

I would try booting in Safe Mode. The key to use usually flashes by when the laptop first boots. Or it may be the 'Delete' key like most PC's use.

Safe Mode launches the OS with minimal drivers. If it works, then you probably have some program interfering with the video card. That would be my guess anyway. You can run 'msconfig' from the Run... icon in the Start menu and try to disable some of the programs temporarily.

You may also be able to reset your video card settings to default while in Safe Mode. It may be a setting for the video card that is wrong.

    Can any one help me????

I recently found the nVidia site saying I could upgrade my video card so i downloaded driver and installed it. It said at the end of the installation that my hardware wasn't as advanced as the driver I installed and my video card came disabled, meaning I can't play any videos on my pc or any graphics games.

My video card is a nVidia GeForce 5200, I tried installing the correct driver but it still won't play any video.

    PLEASE HELP!!!!

from the hardware device manager you can try rolling back the driver to a previous one. if that doesn't help, try uninstalling the driver and rebooting to see what windows will install when it finds new hardware. the proper driver for xp should be: ForceWare Release 80 Version: 81.98 Release Date: February 7, 2006 WHQL Certified. worst case if you've really mucked things up would be a full reformat/reinstall windows, as some pieces of the wrong driver will always remain in the registry.

If you can't rollback, use System Restore and back up prior to the installation of the bogus driver.

For mucked up system/video drivers, there is a neat program called DriverCleaner www.drivercleaner.net I have used it in the past to clean out video/sound drivers that were mucking up my system.

The program removes all traces of old motherboard/sound/graphic drivers, and allows for a fresh install of the latest (or desired) version. It probably has even more features since I last used it.

One warning though, I am unsure if it would work with laptop systems, as those may have customized parts/drivers. It is much faster and easier than a full format.

Thanks everyone, first i didn't need to uninstall the higher driver because it didn't install in the first place. Also i tried using the driver cleaner than installing the correct one but it didn't work, I shall try again like to be sure.
What's System Restore and how do I use it?

    Thanks
