I am trying to copy family videos from VHS to DVD.

I have a Sylvania DVR90VE VHS-to-DVD dubbing DVR and have copied several tapes to DVD. Now I want to edit the DVDs and add my own original audio plus subtitles, etc.

I have Pinacle Instant DVD/CD software and Microsoft Movie Maker.

I noticed the file format to be .vob on the copied discs but I don't know what I need in order to edit them in my available software. Perhaps I should be using DVD-RW discs until ready to finalize each disc to DVD-R.

I have a P4 3.06GHz with 512 Meg RAM and I am running XP Pro - Media Center Edition with a 120GB Hard drive.

    Any help would be appreciated.

You'll probably want to extract the VOBS to MPEG-2 for your editing. You can take a look at this guide:

EDIT: And welcome to our forum.

    Edit and re-author link.
I use Womble mpeg-video wizard to edit my vob's, it will let you add audio and titles. I don't know about subtitles, but maybe the titling function is good enough for you. I use TDA to re-author. Both have fully functional trails available.

    Okay,

I got the .vob files converted to .mpg however, when I try to load the .mpg files in MS Movie Maker I get an error that a codec is missing and needs to be downloaded.

Specifically, what codec am I looking for? I have no clue on this.

    TIA

That's because Microsoft doesn't include a MPEG-2 codec with the OS due to licensing, I believe. But you can DL Stinkys MPEG2 Codec or install PowerDVD or similar players and they install it.
