I'm sorry if this is more of a hardware question and i also have a feeling it's a very stupid one as well. For a very long time i always thought that writing DVD-R DL or DVD-R9 was something limited to very few people or those who possess special dual layer dvd recorders. In fact, i thought this was the main reason people use programs like DVD Shrink to get the contents of dual layer dvds onto a normal DVD-R. I also had the impression that it was because most movies are written on dual layer DVDs that DVD piracy isn't immediately possible and obvious. Is any of this correct or have people been writing and copying dual layer discs all this time?! And my main question is whether i can in fact copy dual layer discs. The dvd drive for my laptop is a Sony DVD+-RW DW-Q58A. Also, my brother's much newer computer has a HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GSA-H21N. If these specs mean nothing, then could somebody just tell me whether the DVD drives of the 2-4 year old laptops and desktops are likely to support dual layer technology? Many thanks

It was like that but nowadays supports all dvd writers DVDR DL burning. You can burn DVD+R DL discs using your Q58 burner. Rip to the HDD with DVDFab Decrypter and burn with Imgburn.

BUT DVDR DL media is expensive and the dvd player compatibility is not that good so it's not really worth it.

Both of your drives are good for DL burning.
If you go for it, try Verbatim x8 DVD+R/DL, burn at 1/2 speed using ImgBurn and book type to DVD-RAM.
See if it will play in your DVD player. Like Baldrick say, they are picky.
