dual layer or DVD+R DL or DVD-R DL are 8.5GB, but holds something like 7.95GB. Dont need to do anything different when authoring, besides making sure that 9GB setting is used. Recommend using CopyToDVD to burn. Nero 6 is known to have issues when burning at the layer break. People have experienced pauses, shudders, skips and choppy player at the layer break. Nero 6 was hit or miss. At $2 a pop, you cant afford to have even one miss. Go with Verbatim DL discs.

I'm going to use Sony Architect to burn a dual layer DVD

Is there anything I should know before doing so, is there any disadvantage to using a Dual Layer disc these days?

The disadvantage IMO is cost for one and not as widely compatible as single layers. some players, dvd drives will have problems reading them.

My XBox and my Toshiba will both play +R DL media with no problems. My PS2 and my Pioneer DVD Recorder won't recognize the disc.

Well,,,,, if you are truly serious about his, you need to out put to DLT and give that to the production house to produce your pressed disks. You just don't "Burn" a DL "Master" and hope that it is good enough. It may be and then again it may not. DLT ( Digital Linear Tape) is the industry standard for producing pressed disks I believe.

If the above quote was not your intention than I hope this was of some help anyway.

    What is DLT?

What if it's not Dual Layer, can a single sided burn dvd be sent to replication house with no problems?

Yes, Professionally pressed dual-layer media plays fine in both, just not the +R DL. It could be the book type setting which I am not sure if I can do with my burner or not. I haven't wanted to mess with upgrading the firmware as it works fine with everything else. And DL media is still a bit pricey for me to mess around with too much.
