I just got the Hauppauge 250, hooked it up, and tried it. The video preview I get in the window (wintv2000) is fantastic quality! However, the recordings I get are utter crap. They have so much noise. I'm using a CBR 15,000 bitrate setting. I am using S-video capturing from a dish box.

    Pentium 4 2.8ghz
    1024mb ram
    Intel integrated video card

I got much better results with my old ATI TV Wonder Pro, I thought hauppauge was supposed to be good, why is it like this?

Hauppauge is supposed to be good, but not necessarily better than ATI. Anyway, got any screen shots?

I been capping from my cable station with a PVR250 for about a year now and it does a great job. I select Stream=Program, CBR=6Mb. The recorded video will not look as good as the live broadcast but it should be pretty close.

Please give further details on 'utter crap' and or post some screen shots.

Make sure that when you are viewing the recorded file on your PC that it iis with software that deinterlaces and that you are viewing in the same size window. WinTV2000 is optimized for viewing live TV on your PC so when viewing the cap'd file you need make sure your comparing apples to apples.

BTW a bitrate of 15Mb is overkill, in fact my experience with the PVR250 is that if you use too high a bitrate it actually seems to degrade the video. CBR between 6 and 8 should be about as good as it gets!

What your are using for playback
Video preview should be the same in recordings unless your using some other 3rdparty player.

Why such a high bitrate? I use DVD Long Play and get very acceptable recordings from my Hauppauge USB2 PVR.
