  1. Just got my minidv and my firewire card is on the way, but I want to be ready to go when it gets here so whats the most basic capturing software out there thats the easiest on your pc memory? Also, can you select what part of a vid you want to transfer to your pc. In other words if I have a full hour long tape recorded, and I only want maybe 10 mins of it on my pc can I just select that part? Oh, one more thing, but I think I already know the answer from all the reading I have done. Is there anyway to compress the vid to a smaller size before you put in on your pc?

WinDV would be a good choice for DV transfers. Type 2 works best with most programs.

Because the DV is on a tape, you would just have to play the part of the tape you wanted to transfer if you didn't want it all.

The camera sets the format. It's DV, you can't change that. After you get it on the computer, you can encode it anyway you want. DV is about 13GB/hour, so make sure you have enough hard drive space.

I use VirtualDub Mod for edits and filtering. You need the Panasonic DV Codec or similar for this. Then you can frameserve it to an encoder or just use VDM if you want to encode to a different AVI type format.

WinDV for the capture. (Actually it transfers rather than capture).
    Have a nice Day
