  1. I am trying to convert an Xvid to a DVD file using Avi2DVD. I have done this before, but only after I installed some other program (Gornak or something, but I can't seem to find it) that put the appropriate decompressor in the appropriate place. Since then I had to re-install Windows, so now I have Avi2DVD, but not the decompressor. I am a total freakin n00b at this stuff, so I need somebody to hold my hand through the process of getting the decompressor. Thanks in advance.

GSpot, AVICodec or VideoInspector should be able to tell you what codec(s) you need.

Gordian Knot wasn't the program, was it ?
    If in doubt, Google it.

I'm guessing it might be the Xvid Codec.

The only other one that might be applicable is the MPEG-2 Codec, but that's for playback. You will need it for watching DVDs on the computer, or a player that installs it. I'm assuming AVI2DVD already has an encoder installed, or you would need that, also. Quenc is one they mention that is freeware.

You might try DivxToDVD instead. There is a freeware version that does a good job of conversion and you don't need to add any helper programs. I think it would do better than AVI2DVD.

If these are Xvids off the internet, you want to watch for MP3 VBR audio. This can cause audio/video sync problems with some encoders. Also PAL<>NTSC conversions can make the video jumpy if not done right.

  4. Thanks. I will try that DivxToDVD program first, since it sounds the most simple.

Gordian Knot doesn't look too familer...might have been the program I had, but I kind of doubt it.

I only said that bacause it's the closest thing I could think of to "Gornak", and also because it has rippacks that contain quite a few codecs.
    If in doubt, Google it.
