    Hello,

I am having trouble with my MPEG Decoders. I have Cyberlink's which works perfectly. However, I first encountered a problem when I installed the trial of Mainconcept's Encoder. It installs an MPEG decoder too, which according to the Windows XP Video Decoder Checkup Utility is not set as the "preferred decoder", but it is still causing problems when I try to playback MPEG-2s.

I uninstalled Mainconcept, and the MPEGs were playing again without a problem. I tried re-installing and trouble started again. Is there anyway to just get the decoder off of my computer. I also might be having trouble with another decoder GPL, but I don't even know where that came from.

    Thank you

Edit: Removed the GPL decoder by downloading the GPL decoder installer, installing it, and then removing it. I think that one was installed with a codec pack I downloaded.

Well I found a way to remove the decoder, using a DirectShow Filter Manager from freecodecs.com, but still having problems unless MainConcept is completely uninstalled

If you make the major mistake of installing a codec pack, you will usually install a bunch of problems along with it.

You might try DXman and Codec Sniper to try to clean things up.

Thanks redwudz.. I actually removed all the mpeg decoders, uninstalled powerdvd, uninstalled mainconcept, and reinstalled powerdvd for it to work again. Then I tried installing Mainconcept again, didn't work. So I removed the dvd decoders, still didn't work. I uninstalled Mainconcept, and it worked again.

I'm guess I'll just keep Mainconcept uninstalled and use Videora for the quick encodes. I use TMPGEnc most of the time anyway.
