  1. Hi
I just got me a nice external DVD recorder.
I want to back up a dvd. I played it from my Computer using Power DVD and had TV out to the DVD recorder.
press record, but no go. Said it was copyright stuff and wouldn't record. Do you believe it!
How do I get around this?
    Thanks
    Jimmy

You need to rip from disc to PC... then output to recorder from ripped files. (this is assuming you don't have a burner on PC, right?

Or you could get a macrovision blocker to do it from dvd player to dvd recorder - or apparentl some lite-on models can disable it.

But you're much better off getting a dvd burner for the pc for backups. They're very cheap and so are single layer blanks. Just use dvdfabdecrypter and dvdshrink to rip and burn. You can get a dvd burner for well under $50 if you look around or get an older non-dual layer burner drive. Well worth the investment.

Using your PC has another advantage - no analogue in the process. The method you are attempting to use at the moment, even if it did work, would lower the image quality and reduce the audio from 5.1 or better down to 2 channel analogue stereo. Use your PC and you can preserve the image quality and the multichannel audio. You would be amazed at the number of commercial discs that can fit on a single layer disc when stripped of extras, langauages etc. sometimes with no extra compression required at all.

if you REALLY REALLY want to do it your way, here is how you do it.

step 1) rip to iso/mds file using dvd decrypter
step 2) install daemon tools, reboot
step 3) mount iso file with daemon tools
step 4) play dvd from your "virtual dvd-rom" drive, it will be stripped of macrovison, region coding, RCE, etc..

I've had same problem trying to copy VHS tapes to DVD and have had some success which may work for DVD copy, although I've not tried it, by:
    1. Setup DVDR recorder to record.
    2. Start video player and pause after 5 seconds.
    3. Start DVDR recording and pause after 5 seconds.
    4. Restart video player and recorder one after the other as though double clicking a mouse.
This works on several VHS tapes I've tried but not all which I suspect is likely due to different types of copy protection on the source, i.e. VHS or DVD.

The above method has been known to work for some recorders and not others.
