I download a DIVX file and decompressed the sound. I am now using TMPG to convert the avi file to a mpg file. I am fairly sure I just need to burn the mpg to my cd now and play in my DVD player, but I would appreciate it if someone can confirm this. Any help would be appreciated and returned to other newbies.
Also, since an avi with uncompressed sound is about twice as large as the original, is this a requirement before burning to mpeg?
Thanks and Regards...

OK step by step.
Did you use a template (either the NTSC or PAL VCD) in TMPGEnc to create your mpeg file? If yes, then your mpeg is ready for authorizing. You cannot just add the mpeg file to a CD-R and burn away (well you could, but it wouldn't be a VCD). This is where your burning program is important. If you have Nero or some other software that burns CD-R(W)'s, check if you have, at the beginning when you choose, what you want to burn, a VCD or also sometimes written as VideoCD mode. In this mode you include your TMPGEnc encoded mpeg file.
Now if you burning program doesn't have such a feature, you have to go about it in a different way. I suggest you download, install and use VCDImagerGUI (in the "tools" section). It's simple to use, as you will see. This software generates a so-called "image file" which (correct me if I'm wrong) every burning program should be able to burn.

Thank You. I do have Nero 5.5 and Easy CD Creator 4. I also chose NTSC Film format in TMPGEnc, so I assume my MPEG should be ready. I will give it a shot once the conversion is done. How about the decompression of the sound on the original DIVX file. Is this necessary?
Regards.

Did you just encode the video part of you file in TMPGEnc? -
I actually downloaded a 750 meg file, decompressed the sound making it 1.8 gig, and then converted it to mpg. Is it necessary to decompress the sound before converting to mpg? Thanks again....

I had to extract the audio from a divx movie and save as a wav file, before encoding it with tmpgenc. Using the audio directly from the divx file gave me a mpeg file with sound, but the sound was out of sync.
Is it necessary? Depends if you like to watch a movie with sound out of sync. -

Whe you say decompressed etc.- do you perhaps mean you converted the sound part of your DivX in DVD2AVI (or other software) into a wav and then used this wav as the audio feed in TMPGEnc to encode it? If so this is correct. TMPGEnc has often had nasty clicking or other odd noises when audio and video file were from the same source.
@Al Bundy
The sync problem that could occure I forgot about completely.

When I make VCD`s from DIVX, most of the time, I can just use the TMPGenc tool, however now and then it says that it can not read the audio, so we use the Decompress tool from AVI2VCD to decompress the DIVx . (Takes about 5 min)
This creates a divx file "*_pcm.aiv" up to three times the orginal file size,, then run it though TMPGenc, this will not effect the size of the total VCD and the audio is compressed in TMPGenc.
Then to cutting and then Nero 5.5 to burn in VCD format

Thanks for all of the help....This worked perfectly. For other newbies...here is a summary:
1) Download Divx Movie
2) Ran AVI2VCD decompress tool. Didn't use the mpg converter, since it was quite slow. This created a avi about 2 1/2 times larger than the original.
3) Ran TMPGEnc to convert the new avi to mpg.
4) Used TMPGEnc to break the mpg's down to burnable size.
5) Used Nero to burn to CD.
6) Played in DVD Player.
Regards....
