I have reformatted my old pc, and then started installing all my video stuff. First I installed the ffdshow that works well on my new pc (vers. Sep 2005). I then installed WinDVD, but it doesn’t open DVD video, neither from the disc drive nor from HDD. Says something like could not set the layers and suggests me to change my screen resolution, what I did with no result.

I installed Dscaler, still doesn’t work. Media Player Classic also says something like could not render.
I’m sure there is something I’m missing here, but can’t figure it out. Any help would be very much appreciated.

I'm assuming you installed your video card driver?

Thank you redwudz. I'm not sure if I did it properly, I'm anything but an expert when it comes to this. Could DVDShrink show the movies in the preview window if the video card driver is not properly installed? I have already done a shrink with no problem...

  4. Sounds like a damaged directshow/overlay issue. To fix you have to reinstall media player. I suggest v9, not v10. Then try a different copy of mplayer classic.

Thanks to both. I will give a try to what you say offline. Also, I'm testing with some avi that I can load there with a memory stick. This way I can be sure if it's a codec thing or a drive thing, right?

    Cheers

Windows Media Player v9 is no longer available for XP users, so I had to download v10. Doesn't work, either. Gives me the error message that has to close, and really closes, upon my nose. It's not my favourite player, anyways.
I downloaded the latest version of Media Player Classic and I can see the video from a DVD. Still, gives me an error and there is no audio. I will install AC3Filter. I thought AC3 ACM would be enough, but it seems not.

Still have to make Windvd work...

    Cheers

    More things you can try.

    1) Download and install a trial version of PowerDVD 3 or earlier - do not install newer versions as they don't come with direct show filters.

    Try playing a DVD

Then install a new ASPI layer which you can get from the tools section. Install and reboot.

    Try playing a DVD

Then install the mpeg-2 codec from the tools section

If that does not work then If afraid the next step might be:

Remove all traces of PowerDVD & WinDVD, uninstall, delete the directories, and remove Cyberlink from CURRENT_USER and MACHINE in the registry.

Try playing a DVD in media player, if it works, or tries to worl... you still have filters installed and need to find out what they are and remove them. If you get a message saying no valid codecs available you have no DVD filters installed and you can skip the next bit.

To see what DVD filters you have installed, I recommed that you go to http://www.inmatrix.com and download ZoomPlayer, attempt to play a DVD and when it starts right click on the screen and select filter properties, this will let you know what is up.

Now install a full version of PowerDVD, hopefully it will work. Do not try and re install WinDVD - this may be the cause of the problem.

Try updating or even downgrading all your graphic card drivers, this can make a big difference due to the overlay which sometimes likes to play up.

That's the extent of my knowledge - I can't help further unless there is something you have not told us

Problem solved. This is what I did:
Uninstalled Dscaler, AC3 filter and AC3 ACM and WinDVD. Deleted MediaPlayerClassic. Cleaned the registry.
Went to Device Manager and fixed a conflict that was shown, by reinstalling the driver. Rebooted computer.
Installed AC3 filter and Media Player Classic.
    Worked.

    Thanks to all
