I was just recently introduced to a way to measure hard drive, and now I'm curious to hear other peoples results, to make sure i'm getting speeds I should be.

Could some of your post your hard drive read speeds/stats

    Mine...

    80GB S-ATA Internal - 59 mb/s
    80GB USB2.0 External - 29mb/s

  2. Could you tell us the test, please? If we don't run the same test, we may as well be comparing apples and oranges.

I'd be interested to test my hard drives out too. Got two identical ones.

Would you also please post the exact hard drive models you have, and what they are connected to? For example, I run two 250GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 SATA drives. I run mine on a Promise RAID controller, but running in IDE mode only (so no RAID, just using the controller as a standard drive connector). My motherboard is an Asus A8V Deluxe.

  3. Keep in mind that read and write speeds vary from the inner to outer cylinders. I assume your giving the max (outer) value.

    hi,
on these hard drives there a lot of factors...
    1. manufacturer.. makes a difference
    2. there different criterias,, ie: substaned rate, bandwidth, cache, burst rate, random seek, etc..
    3. the tet program makes a difference
    4. on your system , the way it configured, and hardware you have and programs running in the background........ will effect differences.....
just to give you an idea....
you might want to take a look at this link....... and see if yours is listed and if so that will give a reasonable idea how your doing in your system!!.... http://www.tomshardware.com/2005/09/27/round/

I use SiSandra for HD transfer speed testing. But even with it, everybody would have to use the same software version to make any testing valid.

    Here's a link to a freeware version: http://www.overclockersclub.com/downloadcenter/download.php?action=file&id=12

It can also benchmark other parts of the system.

the way i was told to do it was to use the NERO burning software.

you go in the configuration properties, and then under the cache tab, it is a function that will measure your speeds on all your drives.

    my external drive:
    maxtor personal storage 3100 80GB 7200rpm USB 2.0

running on a ASUS P4P800-E Deluxe, a Promise Raid controller, 2 S-ATA HD ports

  7. Performance Test has a free 30 day trial and will benchmard your entire system including the hard drive. I've been using this one for years, and use it to diagnose problems when they arise.

  8. Just ran that test (got 49 and 52MB/sec) but it looks far too short and simple to provide significant results.

Maybe we can switch to a more powerful hard drive benchmark tool?

Is there any way I could check my AGP slot speed to make sure it's working ok?
I'm having problems running mpeg2 videos on my old Riva TNT2 32Mb card but it seems the card is ok when I test it on another computer. So I wanted to check my AGP slot speed.

    hi again,
some details... always good... first of all all these test are relative.... for comparisons.. different test programs will give different test results on different pc configurataions.... for the same hard drive!!

now in yours the test is very very short.... and at best it going to give just a ball park figure.. don't know if it measuring avg, or burst or substained speeds..... or random...

now i have nero express and i did the test but i got 3 different results...
    1. with default settings.... i got 45
    2. disbling the nero cache, and doing the test it jumped up to 57!!.
    3. i disabled some background programs, changed my pc configuration alittle and it jumped up to over 90......; smile...
about the best i have seen is 133 on a test system with a sata drive that claimed it could go 300 ....
