I received a DVD from someone that they had converted from a VHS. I don't have access to the VHS. The video and audio is basically what you would expect from an old VHS... not very good. Is there a way to improve the quality of the video and audio? I have been looking through the guides on here, but I haven't had much luck finding the correct guides or understanding some of them.

It's difficult to improve on a video. You can do some filtering of the audio and maybe remove some noise. The same with the video. But you can never recover what is lost. For audio, Audacity is free and does a decent job of filtering. You would likely have to convert the audio to WAV format.
VirtualDub Mod should be able to do that.

The video is is little more complicated. I use VDMod for most video filtering, as it has a lot of free filters available. MPEG seems to have less filtering available, except maybe in the higher end editors.

If you could convert the VHS directly to DV format, that would be the easiest to work with in VDM.

But don't be afraid to play with it. That's how you learn. Convert the DVD to DV format if you want, filter any way you want. It may end up better or worse. But that's the way you learn.

VDM has many, many filters and it's freeware. You can use the Panasonic DV codec to convert to DV. DV is a AVI format that supports frame accurate editing and can use all the VD filters. Filters are available at http://neuron2.net/

Just one suggestion. Others may have better ideas.
