I've read that the new format by DivX Networks is called DivX Media Format and it supports all DVD like features such as menus, subtitles etc. Has it gaind popularity? will a DivX codec (.AVI) enabled DVD player be able to play DivX Media Format movies (.DIVX)?

Nope, no popularity yet....they must release some easy tools that can create menus and such.

The Divx format is nothing more than AVI with some extensions. My old Divx/DVD player, a Liteon 2002, plays them as long as the frame size doesn't exceed 720x576. Of course, it doesn't support the extras like menus and web links.
