    What are audio video containers? Somone told me that a VOB file is a container - its not a codec, it just contains audio, video & subtitle streams in a single file (container). Is this true? Are there other types of containers?

    but vob is not a container similiar to those, a dvd requires all the ifo,bup and vobs...just a vob file is not meant for playback.

    Do these containars allow you to use any audio/video format or do they predefined list of allowed formats? Could you tell me which containers allow which formats?

    no, they do not support all formats.

    but it is not complete....but it gives you some information.
