I just tried to burn my first DVD9 and it flopped.

I used Nero. It seemed to be OK until I got the message that the verification process had failed.

In reading around, I've found that some people recommend turning off the verification process in Nero, while others say to leave it on? What's the story?

What exactly is being verified? When the verification process begins, haven't the tracks already been burned to the disc? If this is so, then at that point, you have either a good burn or a failure. If you try the disc and it plays, you have a good burn; if it doesn't play, you have a failure. So what is the point of the verification process? What is it supposed to be telling you?

Bearing in mind that right now I'm stuck with Nero, any suggestions for my next try, so I don't waste another $4 disc?

  2. At the moment, the most reliable way to burn DL discs seems to be:

DVDDecrypter. ISO Read -> ISO Write.

I've done several that way with no coasters. You could do a search on "dual layer" or similar to confirm. Good luck.

  3. Sonic's RecordNow does a good job too.

I'd agree about Nero's verification, not much use. It is more usable when you burn backup data discs, but for video, playing the DVD will tell you more. I don't trust Nero with DL media either.

You didn't mention your DL media brand either. Verbatim DL still seems to be the most dependable.

  6. Sounds like my results with Ritek +R DL disks as sold by Memorex. I figured at $2 a disk how bad could they be? Well if I go past the 7Gig point they start getting hit or miss if it'll burn and verify. Plus Either My Sony 400DVD changer doesn't like +R DL or it doesn't like Ritek. I haven't found any -R DL to try yet. One of these days I'll be trying Verbatim +R DL but I don't want to waste more money if they won't play in the Sony. The Riteks do play in my Pioneer DVD Recorder but I want it for recording no tplaying.
