Ok so I searched all through the topic archives and I didnt see anything like this.
I'll start out describing what I want to do and maybe someone out there will know how to help.
I bought a Japanese DVD Region 2 that has Japanese Subtitles but NO english subtitles. I have ripped the DVD and it is now a Non-Encrytped Video_TS folder on my harddrive.
What I want to do is rip the Japanese Character Subtitles off into an editable text file (probably using SubRip).
Then I want to open the text file using MS Word and use Babelfish.com to translate the Japanese Characters into English.
Then I want to reinsert the english where the Japanese was in the MS Word Text file and reinsert it onto the movie.
I have struggled for 2 weeks and finally am thinking of giving up can anyone help?

AFAIK you'll have to OCR the subs to get text, as you've said probably using subrip. You'll probably have to hunt up some Japanese specific character fonts & such, but shouldn't be that different from any other language -- I think folks from all over use subrip, & the biggest prob is when you have a US edition of Windows. You'll have to work out the fine points of timing and lines probably in Subtitle Workshop, and then just follow guide to get the subs on DVD. THat is if the translation doesn't stop you.

I *think* that you might want to check out, do a bit of searching at Microsoft's site, looking for specifics on enabling the fonts -- start with language packs? Some programs can enable different character sets, like Subtitle Workshop. You might get some useful info from searching the doom9.org subtitle forum -- think I've seen more posts there from folks using Japanese, & could check out getting in touch with the developer for Subrip. Googling on "Japanese Subtitles" got 2,800,000 hits, so probably get a lot of info that way, & might also get an idea of the expected accuracy of Babelfish or other means of auto translation.
