Just what the subject says. I went from win2k pro where usb2 was just fine. I started from a fresh install of xp, applied SP2 and still nothing.

I've googled the topic to death and haven't come up with anything. Even an email from the mobo vendor said that XP should see it automagically. They don't even have specific usb2 drivers for XP available for download.

In the end I may just go back. Besides the usb2 issue, the channels look like crap on my ATI AIW anyway. Colors are off, channels slightly stutter...

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
    Have a good one,

Do you still have the Win2K chipset drivers for your Foxconn board installed? Perhaps that is causing both of these problems. There should be a WinXP Chipset driver on the FoxCONN site. They usually have the gambit of chipset drivers for their boards.

when you did the fresh install of XP did you delete the partition that had win2k? you'll need to delete that partition and let xp partition and format it then install xp. bits and pieces of win2k can be left behind if you just install xp over it which could be why your usb 2 doesn't work. just my 2cents!

No on both. Its a fresh install from bootable floppy. It started the whole thing with new partitions and a format.

Though, I may have to give a partial maybe to ROF. I was looking for usb2 drivers specifically since that's what I've done in the past. However, I did download the chipset (and other) drivers while I was there.

I'll try installing the chipset driver(s) and get back. Thanks.

(PS: For informations sake, however, though this is a new install, I did originally try to upgrade my win2k pro the first time. It passed the HCL, but withough my scanner and parrallel port...whop-ti-do, started the install. Things looked good until it had to boot up XP for the first time. Kept blue screening on the hard drive. Thus my clean install instead.)

  5. 1. Try removing all the USB devices from the Device Manager and reboot. Have your WinXP cd in the drive for installing the drivers from.

    If that dosen't work,
    2. You can try using the System File Checker to replace any lost or replaced .dll system files.
Go to START, RUN, type CMD and in the DOS like window type sfc/scannow Be sure to have the Windows XP cd in the drive and sit back. After it's finished reboot, check the Device Manager to USB drivers.

You didn't by any chance turn off the USB controller(s) in BIOS did you?

OK, finally got a chance to work on this last night.

    - The bio has USB2 enabled. Didn't expect to find anything there since it worked under Win2k.

    - Tried removing all the USB related stuff and let it re-add all the devices. No workie.

    - Tried to manually update the driver using the latest chipset driver from Foxconn. Though I could download what was called the 'chipset' driver, it only installed the latest AGP driver.

Some further searching, showed me that MS refers to USB2 as 'Enhanced Mode' USB in WinXP versus the common USB2 in Win2k.

Sure enough, my device drivers show a PCI to USB Enhanced controller (or something close to that). Tried updating that manually only to have it come back and tell me I have the latest one already.

However, I plug in my external hard drive and I still see the message that the device is running in 'non-enhanced' mode.

What do you guys see as my options here? Frustration is setting in....

USB2 as 'Enhanced Mode' USB in WinXP
If your Device Manager is showing the Enhanced Host Controller in the USB header I would tend to think that you are running USB2.

Did you check by plugging in anything else that required USB2? Flash drive, anything? Possibly you are getting a false reading from your ext. hdd. (?)

Unplugged the external hd from the rear usb port and plugged it into the front usb port. Sure enough, no complaints and data tranfer was more to what I expected.

So, two things must have happened. First, at some point I must have moved the hard drive to one of the rear ports and not realized it. Second, it must have been the first time the rear ports were used with a usb2 device.

Now that I know that at least my front ports are usb2 I can figure out why my rear ports are not. They all should.

Thanks to everyone and to their suggestions. At a mimimum a learned a little something about my mobo (rear standard-usb only) and that MS has decided to name usb2 as 'Enhanced USB' instead of usb2.

Have you checked mobo manufacturer's site for BIOS updates and whether any updates may include USB fixes? I installed a USB 2 adapter card in an older PC and had to flash the BIOS to enable USB 2. Be very careful that you get the correct BIOS update for the mobo if you do because flashing BIOS with incorrect BIOS can make mobo permanently unusable as you may or may not know.
