    Hi,

I need to install an MPEG-2 Decoder on my new Win XP SP2 PC, which should I install?

There seem to be quite a few.

On my older PC in my codecs backup folder I have 2:

MPEG2DEC.dll (the zip is -for ver.- mpeg2dec_25_dll_20030107.zip).
    Stinkys MPEG2 Codec

But maybe neither of those are the best one to install, after all I've not installed a MPEG-2 decoder in 2-3 years, there may be newer better ones.

Compatibility with as much software as possible would be good, inc. WMP 11 which currently won't play DVDs though I've established the error is because there's no decoder installed. Why oh why does this not come as standard with Windows!!

Advise on which free MPEG-2 decoders to install would be appreciated. I should add that support for commercially encrypted movie DVDs is essential.

    Thanks.

Any mpeg2 codec will work with all mpeg2 material, so there isn't separate versions needed for say standalone mpeg files and DVD discs. Stinky's or ffdshow should work fine.
