I understand PowerDVD wan't let you place bookmarks on a file ripped to a DVD. Does anybody know why? Is there a workaround? If not, is there an alternative player that does?

I need it beacuse I'm placing my home videos onan HD, but without bookmarking the whole exercise is useless.

Thanks, but I'm not very technical. Since I've no idea what ISO means, could you suggest the settings for the ISO Mode? Also, are you saying that Daemon Tools will allow me to bookmark?

rip the dvd to an iso file with dvd decrypter (mode/iso/read)

with daemon tools, mount the iso as a virtual dvd-rom.

open that virtual drive with powerdvd and set your bookmarks like normal.

playing the dvd from your hdd as a virtual drive through powerdvd, instead of dvd files from hdd will mimic (for powerdvd) the exact same thing as playing it from the disc.. allowing you to set bookmarks, etc.

Well, I tried! Ripping one of my DVDs produced an ISO file and an MDS files. Is that the way it's supposed to be? Then I tried installing Daemon, but it won't install. When I click on the icon after it has supposedly installed, nothing happens. So I seem to have come to a dead-end. HELP!!!

it is supposed to rip to an iso & mds file.. you can choose either to mount the disc image.. the mds file is just an extra file that burning programs can use.

as far as daemon tools, you probably installed version 4.xx, which i've had problems with on some systems.. uninstall that version, or install version 3.47 over it. it's available on the same download page.

I'll try that - when I get home.

However, I think we need to remeber what the original objective was. I need to combine a lot of home video DVDs into one big file for viewing on the HD. I can rip them all, one by one, and put the ISO files in their own dedicated folders. But then what? How can I create one image out of them for bookmarking?

well, basically if i were in your boat, here is how i would be doing it.

    1) create a folder called "home movies" on my c: drive

    2) rip my dvd's to iso's in to that folder, naming each dvd/iso file something recognizable, like "wife's birthday party 2005.iso"

    3) when i wanted to view that particular dvd, i would go down to my taskbar, click on daemon and tell it to mount that specific disc image (iso/mds).

    4) once you mount the specific image (iso/mds), open it in powerdvd, you'll be able to pull up bookmarks for that specific image..

it wont be one big file, but a bunch of different files, for each specific dvd..

now mind you, a full single layer dvd is about 4.37gb, so i hope you have the hdd space to accommodate this.
