  1. I have a MKV container file.. with 2 audio streams and some 5 subtitle streams.. Can I convert all to DVD-R with the chapters??
I don't have the DVD -Writer, so If I have the image file i guess it'll be OK..
Then I'll take it to my friend's place (who has the writer!) ..

If you don't have a DVD burner, how are you going to get a 4+gb image file to your friend's place ?

Look up the guides and tools section (use the conversion search fields - MKV to ...) to find out how to convert this to a DVD, however after that you might just have a big image on your HDD that you can't do much with.

Demuxing is the process of extracting the video and audio into seperate files for processing. I haven't worked with MKV files before, but for standard avi files I always demux the audio and process it seperately to the video.

    Is it really necessary ?

If you just want it done quick, then no. Find a one-click-wonder appliacrion (WinAVI, DVD Santa etc.) that will churn out something quick. Quality will be low to average, but there will be no real need to invest any time or effort. Just load'n'go.

If you want to get something that is as good as it can be given the source, look for guides that show you how to pull the file apart to get to the video, audio and subtitle streams within, then how to properly convert them to DVD compliant formats, and how to author them into a DVD. Yes, it will take a lot longer, especially the first time. And yes, you may well get lost along the way and have to come back here looking for answers. But in the end you will understand how it works, why it works the way it does, and the output will be substantially better than any one-click-wonder can barf out.

Just my 2 cents worth. I'll get off my soap box now and go to bed.
