You're aware that XviD non gmc to XviD gmc won't improve matters? Possibly if you reencode from your original sources. As the 450 uses the Vibratto2 chipset, it doesn't support gmc. See here.

I've already explained, and even provided a link: That player (according to the listing here at VideoHelp) is equipped with the ESS Vibratto II chipset, that doesn't support gmc.

Thought that it supported 1 warp point GMC? Nero as I recall uses upto 3 warp point, but unlike XviD can make use of 1 warp point, useless as that is.

    Yes, that's true:
    Does not support: -
Video Decs: Qpel, 3 warp-point GMC
Audio Decs: AAC-HE (should play but without SBR element)
Various: PAR or DAR signalling, encoded within the Mpeg4 bit-stream.
In laymans terms - what would the difference between a gmc/non gmc encode be? (@ the same bitrate.) Will I bounce out of my TV sofa yelling "Wow! Look at that gmc!" or just keep nibbling at my sour cream crisps, completely unaware of that some über video voodoo is going on in my AVI player?

First thing I think is to understand what GMC is:
    http://ronald.vslcatena.nl/docs/xvidfaq.html#C3f

So, no it isn't going to make a huge difference, but still every bit counts.

If every bit counts, quit using XVID. Compared to MPEG-2, it's crap. And if you use enough bitrate, you won't need all the video compression voodoo.

MPEG-4 is crap compared to MPEG-2?
XviD can reach DVD quality and at lower bitrates.

So, according to the article, DivX with GMC is OK with Vibratto II (since it uses only 1 warp-point GMC) but XviD isn't, since it uses 3 warp-point GMC.

  14. i think the point thats trying to be get across here, is it's basically pointless to reencode your videos and think you will actually GAIN quality by reencoding them...celtic_druid is correct though......you'd have to have an above dvd quality source to prove this, but this is why hd dvd and blu ray (eventually at least) will not be using mpeg 2 for video (yes, im aware that the early blu ray discs will be...thus is why i said eventually) but yes, given a high enough quality source, xvid, divx, and any and all versions of h.264 do blow mpeg-2 apart quality wise
