  1. Hey all!

Wanted to know if it's possible to burn a video to VCD and add subtitle.

If so how do i do?? Any different burning prog?? I'm currently using nero/nero vision and fddshow(or something). When burning DVD in nero vision the subtitle gets burned as well, thanks to "fddshow"....but not when i try to burn as VCD in nero express

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks for now

You have to encode the video with the subtitle. Since VCD does not support selectable subtitles like DVD and SVCD do, it must be part of the video stream, not a separate component that is muxed in. I am not an expert on this, but I have read that it is possible to use Virtual Dub to re-encode the video with a subtitle. You expect the quality of your video to degrade as a result of re-encoding it. A web search on the subject should lead to some guides on how to do it.

If you demux your VCD into separate audio and video streams, some (not many, but some) DVD authoring programs will allow MPEG-1 video and make a DVD out of it, if you re-encode your audio to 48 Khz from 44.1. If you have such an authoring program, you could simply add the subtitles and make a DVD out of it without re-encoding the video to VCD.

*IF* I remember correctly, there are a couple of formats for subs at least on SVCD -- not sure if it extends to VCD or not. I think one of them was phillips, they weren't/aren't viewable on all set top boxes, and were generally a pain to create, with only a couple of tools available.

That said, there was a decent thread on this at doom9.org, where someone went pretty far nailing all of this down if you'd care to search the sub section of their forum.

Hard subs, basically making the overlay a permanent part of the frame, is possible in V/Dub using either of a couple filters. Avery Lee's gone to some length to document his filter, but the vobsub version is perhaps easier to use (though without much documentation at all).
