HI there I have an eMac Running OSX 10.3 and the following programmes Roxio Toast 6, iDVD 5, Quicktime 7 Pro, VLC, DivX. I want to burn a quicktime movie originally an avi file to dvd - I am using a third party Superdrive a Iomega SuperDVD 16x - it cam with no software but my computer can see it although lists it as a different model however I managed to import a quicktime movie into Toast and produce a dvd that will play on my mac but not a set top dvd player. since then trying to repeat the process my mac begins to encode in Toast but after 2 hours finishes encoding and then says there was an OSX error -60. I dont know why it burnt once but now wont at all and once I do get it to burn how can I get it to playback in a set top dvd player? Also I tried importing the movie to iDVD but it doesnt see the External Superdrive so I cant burn it direct from there? Any help please?

    Many thanks
    Thanks everyone

I'm not a Toast or AVI expert, but .avi is just a container used on the PC side, as .mov is a container used on the Mac side. What is the video codec? What is the audio codec and sampling rate? Open the file in QuickTime Pro and please tell us all about the video and audio *inside* the container.

Let's be optimistic and say that iDVD 5 has no trouble encoding the file in question, but doesn't see your burner. This Macworld article suggests saving an iDVD 5 project as a disc image (.img), then burning it to DVD using Toast 6:

Thanks, Troy. Here's something you can try:

Open the original .avi in QuickTime Pro, and try exporting to a .mov file (Movie to QuickTime Movie).

Be sure and convert the audio to uncompressed 48 kHz 16-bit stereo. BUT... Try not to change the video at all, just pass it through. In other words, set the video to use the exact same codec and settings it already uses, so hopefully it won't get re-encoded - just passed through.

If this works, maybe Toast and/or iDVD will like the resulting file better. This is only a guess on my part.

Ok before I go any further I've imported the quicktime movie to iDVD and saved it as a disc image so it went through the encoding process and said it saved successfully but when I drag the disc image from the desktop to toast it says its a file toast doesnt recognise? I read the article and did just what it said so Im even more confused?
    Thanks everyone

Troy, I'm sorry if I wasn't clear. Does Disk Utility recognize your Iomega burner? If so, you should be able to drag the .img file created by iDVD onto the left pane of the Disk Utility window, then click the orange & black Burn button.

If using Toast, there might be two different ways to do it. In Toast, look for a tab that lets you burn a disk image. Then from that tab, Toast should accept the .img file. Or, you should be able to mount the .img file (by double-clicking on it) and give Toast the VIDEO_TS folder from the mounted .img.

Before burning, why not mount the .img file and use Apple DVD Player to open the VIDEO_TS folder? That way, you can see what the finished disk will look like. If iDVD screwed up the encode, you don't waste a blank.

Hi there it does recognise the drive in disc utilities (although it lists as something else) but when I go to burn it opens up the cd tray on the mac and there is no option to change it to the superdrive?

    Thanks

Im begining to feel like giving up the Ghost!!! Im just spending too much time and money on this - how many discs am I wasting?? this error message saying ' Cant record to disc coz problem with the source material' what does this mean? does that mean I have to go through the whole idvd process again which took hours just to get the finished project which now wont burn. Im confused. if it plays ok in the Apple dvd player there wheres the problem? I dont expect answers really just throwing my hands up to the sky at the moment. Thanks for all your help people though I do appreciate it.
    Thanks everyone

Been there. Once you get past the initial hurdles, you may find life is good.

Suppose you open Disk Utility, drag the .img file onto the left pane, put a blank DVD in the Iomega burner and wait a few seconds, THEN click burn in Disk Utility? Does that give it a clue which drive to use? Maybe you need Patchburn before Disk Utility will fully coooperate with the Iomega burner:

    http://www.patchburn.de/

Alternatively, here are some steps from After Dawn for using Toast to burn the VIDEO_TS folder:

    BURN Using TOAST 6

    1. Run toast 6.X
    2. Select the DATA tab
    3. Under the disc options window tab, select ADVANCED
    4. Select "DVD-ROM (UDF)"
    5. Select "New Disc" and name it with CAPS_ONLY_LIKE_THIS
    (no spaces)
    6. Add your new VIDEO_TS folder to the disc.
    7. Add or create an AUDIO_TS folder, even if it is empty.
(Some players like to see this folder)
    8. Burn (Use slowest speed you can stand to wait for)
DO NOT USE THE "VIDEO" TAB. This is for creating VideoCD,
or DVD from video files such as MPG, AVI etc. It is NOT for
burning DVD from ripped files!!! This is something MANY
    people don't understand!!!
8.5 In version 6.0.7 I believe you CAN burn a "DVD From
VIDEO_TS Folder" from the Video tab.

  11. AVI may be a container for a DivX file.

If using Toast 6, download DivX 6 QT component from DivX, install, then select Video tab, DVD-Video option in drawer, drag/drop AVI file into Toast, click red record button.

If using Toast 7, select Video tab, DVD-Video option in drawer, drag/drop AVI file into Toast, click red record button.
