This is driving me bonkers, yes maybe I could just rename them all, whenever I encounter them, but this is really wierd, the advanced settings in the explorer>tools menu>files types for the .vob extension are EXACTLY the same as for .mpeg, i even added .vob to wmplayer.exe's supported file types in the registry! GAAH! Still when I try to play a vob (& yes I also added the "&Play" action and tried that in "files types" advanced settings) wmplayer.exe opens alright, but the status just says "Playing" for 5 seconds, then say "Playlist1, F" for about 3 seconds, and goes back to just saying "Playing" and that just goes on forever.

Please help! Is it just a crazy thing to just want to have wmplayer play .vob files without renaming every single one?

    -Thanks for your time.

Yes . Use Media Player Classic instead. Its free and will play .vob files with no problem.

  3. Have you tried right clicking on a VOB file and choosing Open With -> Choose Program, then checking the "Always use the selected program to open this king of file" option?

Oops, never mind. Read the question wrong. Your problem probably stems from the MPEG 2 demultiplexer filters you have installed.

jlietz: Now... well you see, it plays them just fine, if it's fed them with .mpg as the extension, which means some quirky little thing in the the registry (probably) I believe, has wmplayer treating them differently.

Just supposed that it's necessary, like, if you encounter enough that it's an extreme pain to rename them all to mpeg, when for some wmplayer has to be a brat about it, like a kid or dog that will only take medicine when it's wrapped in something sweet or savory (.mpg instead of the NASTY tasting .vob).

Or on the other hand, suppose it is just a matter of unquenchable curiosity: Why will it accept the same file and handle it appropriately with a different extension? (that is, in addition to immense convenience, I HAVE to know why the difference given just the extension.)

Well, I see it more like "why should anything besides a DVD player ever care about playing VOBs?" - After all, it's just parts of a Video DVD taken out of context.

  7. Try using Graphedit to play a VOB and and MPEG file. Look to see what filters it uses for each. You might be able to configure your system so that the file parser or demuxer that's used for MPEG also handles VOB.
