I was thinking about getting the Pioneer DVR-110DBK, but after doing some research, it seems that there are very little DVDs that the pioneer will actually burn at the full speed of 16x. So I started looking at others, and came across this drive. I was wondering if you guys think this is good for DVD stuff, I'm not so much worried about the CD side. But I do alot of DVD back up on my computer, so I'm hoping this drive would be good with that, and not reject alot of copyrighted discs.

And if this isn't the best, which would you recommend?

This drive will reject all copyrighted discs. It's supposed to do so as all DVD drives do, but there is software available (ie. DVD Fab Decrypter) which will help you overcome this limitation. If it were me I'd stay away from this drive because of all the reports of problems from tray locks, software issues, and many malfunctioning hardware problems. Do a search on the web for this drive. If people are having this much trouble it wouldn't be a drive I'd recommend.

That is the exact burner that I am planning on getting. Just need to free up a drive bay in my PC. Thinking about selling my 1640 for this 1655. Anybody?

    To codeseven and HatchetMan:

Get the BENQ 1655 which has the lightscribe feature. According to the BENQ FORUM the 1655 does better at writing to 16x media than the 1640. I'd actually keep the 1640 you have HatchetMan and buy the 1655. If you don't want the lightscribe feature then wait a few weeks for the BENQ 1650.

budz, the forum benq expert, good to know 1655 is better at 16x media, but which for +R DL media at say... 4x? 1620,1640,1650,or 1655?

I'm not the benq expert I just do a lot of reading at the BENQ FORUM and I base my opinions on my own experience with the BENQ drives. There are Cdfreaks members who do a lot of experimenting with the BENQ drives. I've done some DL DVD+R burning with my 1640's which work well in all of my standalone dvd players except for my pioneer standalone dvd recorder wouldn't play it at all. I use DECRYPTER or IMG BURN to burn DL & SL discs. I'm anxious to see what the BENQ 1650 will offer. PLEXTOR's 755 should be released in the USA as well. The last dvd burner they put out was the 740A which is a rebadged BENQ 1640 drive.

  9. Speed isn't everything - what about media compatibility in general, quality of burn, firmware availability even warranty period ?
