    Hi All!

tryin to flash my DVD-rom drive to make it region-free since I have DVDs with different region settings. I'm aware of the risks involved, so I'd like u guys to drop some wisdom on me.

On http://forum.rpc-1.com/dl_all.php i found different firmware upgrades for my DVD-rom drive, which are labeled as follows:

Firmware XXXX is an upgrade for drives with a 11xx firmware only
Firmware YYYY is an upgrade for drives with a 13xx firmware only
Firmware ZZZZ is an upgrade for drives with a 17xx firmware only

how do i find out whether my DVD-rom has an 11xx, 13xx, 17xx or other firmware?

Sorry for asking the dumb question of the year but i really don't want to destroy my DVD drive with bad flashing

    Thanks in advance...
    eligen

Sorry, but my crystal ball isn't working today. Please state exactly the make and model of your DVD-ROM Drive, so we can determine which firmware you should use. Otherwise, all we can do is take a wild guess.

An other option would be to use DVD43. A free little programme that works in the background to remove regional coding and some copy protection.

My DVD-rom drive is a TOSHIBA SD-R6112 1031. Here's what I get on the firmware forum:

    Toshiba SD-R6112 - 1030, 1031 / 1730, 1731 / 1M31
    Laptop DVD-R/RW drive
You can make your drive region free (RPC-1) by using one of these firmware (patch by Hijacker)
Patched X031 RPC-1 (ONLY for drives with 10xx firmware)
Patched X731 RPC-1 (ONLY for drives with 17xx firmware)
Patched XM31 RPC-1 (ONLY for drives with 1Mxx firmware)
To be installed correctly, a drive region code must be selected before using the patched firmware.
    RPC-2

So I get two different packages, one by clicking on the specific model, and the other by clicking on the firmware type. Are those two different types of patches or one represents a firmware update and the other one represents the real thing, I mean the patch?

    Thanks again!

Most manufacturers have a utility for checking.

Most official firmware packages will check before allowing you to continue.

I believe Nero Speed will show all of your burner info.
