Is there any freeware prog I can use to get screenshots of DVDs? Neither WMP nor RP have a built in screenshot tool. I have tried turning off hardware acceleration/overlays so that I can take screens normally, but only get one of 2 results (depending on the settings I choose): 1) Nothing changes or 2) DVDs won't play at all. I have even tried some programs that claim they can take screens of DX and overlays, but they all failed.

  4. Or you could also rip it in file mode, then load the VOB into Virtual Dub Mod.

Media Player Classic can do. Load your DVD, press pause when you have at sight the frame you want to snapshot, then, File - Save image.

There is a Sticky on this HERE... I've had real trouble with this too. To be honest I never figured it out with freeware but PowerDVD had a limited free trial, you could give that a go if its a one off project.

EDIT: Got cought on the phone :P Guess I'll be giving some of these ^^^ ago again

PowerDVD isn't freeware, and a trial period isn't sufficient. I'm planning to convert some home videos to DVD with my standalone DVD recorder, then get screencaps from the DVDs (I don't have a video capture card). It's a big project, and a 30 trial period simply won't be enough.

MPC just gives me an error when it tries to save a screenshot. (GetCurrentImage failed, hr=8000ffff)

It looks like virtaulDubMod could work, but it wants to convert the whole DVD to MPEG2 before it'll play it. (I aborted the conversion and then tested taking a screen with the partialy converted video, the save was successful.) Is there any way around this, any way to make VDM play the DVD directly without having to convert it first?

I'll try VLC in a bit, have to wait for it to download.

  8. You could also rip in file mode, then use dgIndex to make a dv index file, then load that into Virdual Dub Mod. Or make an AVIsynth script to load the dv file.

    Buy it. http://www.edirectsoftware.com/product.php?product_id=16271
The $10 won't kill you. Add $7 shipping. A rip-off, but $17 for good software still won't kill you.

You can always drop VOBs randomly into an MPEG-enabled VirtualDub and use it to EDIT->COPY FRAME TO CLIPBOARD and then open in an image editor like Photoshop.

VLC seems to work well, although it'll take a little getting used to. (The DVD menus don't work in it. It does have it's own built in navigation though, so it's just a matter of getting used to using that instead.)

    Thnx for all the tips.
