Adobe video editors are not great for MPEG editing. Try MPEG Video Wizard.

Sorry, I mis-read your post. I never use Encore. I am using Premiere 6.5 and editing MPEG file is a pain.

Sounds to me like Encore's having prob reading the files, prob locking from an incompatibility issue or two -- anyway, IMHO If Encore tries to use a certain set of files to decode the video, and it can't find what it's after in those files, then it can lock.

Usually I've seen this sort of thing when files are changed to other versions, or other versions are registered as default with Windows. As Adobe uses Mainconcept (AFAIK), & since using another mainconcept app, I'd check there 1st, re-registering *Adobe's* mainconcept files, or just reinstalling Encore.

Or could temporarily rename Adobe version Mainconcept files, or the separate encoder versions instead. And check for other mpg2 decoders on your system, renaming those files temporarily.
