  1. I have an xvid file with resoltuon of 800 x 320. The video does not play in 588, although the file playes fine in my Philips 642. The xivid file does not have packed bitstream, by the way.

Has anyone had a similar problem? Is there a firmware fix for the Pioneer player?

Are you 100% correct that this XviD file is 800x320 because that does not sound "right" ?!?!?

If that is correct and that is the resolution then the problem is not the Pioneer but the file as that is not "in spec" with standard XviD/DivX encoding principles. Generally speaking "full screen" is considered 640x480 with a widescreen movie having less "height" ... for instance a movie with a 2.35:1 aspect ratio would be 640x272 in resolution.

So the best thing would be to re-encode the XviD to a new XviD or DivX and reduce the resolution. Assuming this XviD at 800x320 is using a 1:1 ratio then it should be reduced to 640x256 in resolution.

I am surprised that the Philips can play it at all but don't blame the Pioneer for not being able to do this as it is expecting a file with a width of no more than 720 (with 640 being standard).

  3. I'm aware that 800X320 is not standard Divx resolution, hence the original question. I just wish there may be a work around from the Pioneer 588 since the Philips can handle it.

I am also suprised that the Philips can handle it. Most players support 720x576 max and everything I have seen suggests that the 642 was the same. In fact I am quite sure that I have seen posts where people couldn't get WAF releases playing on 642's.

The work around is to re-encode to 720x288.

  5. Philips 642 will play a file with 800 horizontal resolution. I've also read plenty of other posts mentioning this when comparing the 642 with other DVD players, such as this one on videotool:
