  1. I'm considering getting my girlfriend an iPod Video for Christmas, but have a few question before I blow a few hundred dollars on one. She has a Mac with OSX and downloads tv show "video clips" in the Xvid format, but on the whole is fairly computer illiterate.

Are there any major issues with getting Xvid "clips" onto the iPod? I saw an article on the main page of this site (http://homepage.mac.com/major4/ipod.html) which seems to be the exact program I'm looking for, but it doesn't mention anything about encode times other than saying it's "extremely fast". It also doesn't mention the final video output quality on the iPod.

Basically, it would be great if some of you guys could share your experiences with getting Divx/Xvid onto the iPod (using a Mac).

    Thanks!

XviD = MPEG-4, as long as it is SP, the resolution isn't too high and it is in an mp4 container then it should work. By video clips you probably mean avi's though? ffmpeg, mp4box, etc. should all work under OSX or Quicktime Pro should be able to convert as long as the audio is mp3.

Here's a question though. Can an iPod playback an mp4 containing mp3 instead of aac audio? Don't think Quicktime can, however it is perfectly specs compliant and both can obviously handle mp3 by itself.

Sorry if this seems a little dumb but does that mean I can download clips, TV shows or whatever in Xvid format and remux them with MP4box (Windoze PC) and produce an iPod compliant video without any re-encoding? I ask as the majority of TV shows you can DL are Xvid 624*352 resolution and iPod Video can play that res at least!

mp4box is cross platform, should compile ok under OSX, so no need for windows.

Yes, in theory. Not sure exactly what the ipod supports though. Think it is SP only and most stuff that you download probably uses b frames, which means ASP. Also like I said no idea if an ipod can playback mp3 in mp4. Even if it can't, at least that would mean only re-encoding the audio.
