Are there any drives and / or media to allow for rewrite on a dual layer disk? Do you believe any of the current lot of dual layer burners will be able to use rewriteable dual layer media?
If the DL+RW is not yet available, does anyone have any information at all?

Never seen them. But I hear that this year we should start seeing them. JVC has a standalone recorder that does DVD+RW DL and Memorex has created discs for it but I've not seen either of them in stores.

Doubt it'll be useful. The media will be so expensive, it won't be popular until BluRay or HD-DVD come out, then all bets are off.
It's like HD-CD... Too little too late. -
It probably wouldn't be too expensive. Maybe $10 a disc or less which is rather cheap considering some people still only have 40GB hard drives they paid over $100 for.

$10 is okay with me. I don't understand why people think all recordable media should be less than a $1 for each disc. I bought some VHS tapes recently, and they were $3 each! DVD+R dual layer is about $15 for 3 discs, but the ones I see are crappy. That would be acceptable, as long as they are good discs. But it looks like quality is not a concern for manufacturers nor most consumers. They just want to keep mass-producing 100pk discs for $20, and expect most people to think it is quality. I beg to differ.

I think alot of this wanting cheap media has to do with wanting to backup everything under the sun and beyond. Of course, there are also alot of people who would rather use free applications to perform complex tasks rather than purchase applications specifically designed to do such things. It's the something for nothing. You get the same types of arguements when you discuss prices of pressed media. As if the people (and there are alot of them) who brought you such media shouldn't have the right to earn a living and make a profit doing so.

I agree that RW media should be more expensive...as far as blank media overall though......i gotta say this, as far as your VHS tape...it is reuseable, so its worth the 3 dollars...if i had use for dvdrw discs, i'd consider paying a similar price for them as well.....as far as disc companies not making a profit...honestly that sickens me...it costs them something like 5 cents to make a dual layer disc and they sell them off for 5-6 dollars a disc (in my area at least) so i dont see how they arent making a killing on them as is....... even if they were to start throwing out dual layer discs at like a dollar a disc or heck even RW discs at that price, they would STILL be making a killing on them.......and ROF....you do realize that over time, prices of electronic things DO in fact become cheaper to make, hence they can sell them cheaper and still churn a rather sickning profit on them?? If you paid more than 100 bux for a 40 gig harddrive these days, i'd have to laugh at you.............given, i realize five years ago, that was acceptable...but these days if you pay 100 bux for a 120gb drive your bordering the line of being ripped off......

Although DVD+RW DL sounds like a good idea I doubt it would be compatible with any drives on the market. The only drives that would be able to read it would be the drives that can write it. The reason is the reflectivity of the media. DVD+R DL and DVD-R DL have pretty poor reflectivity. This is especially true on the second layer - L1. Going to a phase change type material(RW) will only reduce this further. I hope it does not come out since you would see even more bitching about why does this crap not work on my unit and I cannot update my present drive to write it.

Talk about an old thread.
Did no one notice the date of the original post in this thread ???

Yes, but it was resurrected by someone with the same question that wasn't answered, and the discussion is still valid.

Just seems odd that someone would resurrect such an old thread (with no info in it to begin with) when there are many already existing (and not nearly as old) threads dealing with the issue(s) of DVD+RW DL media.
